ST. Louis, October 21, 1864

DEAREST HUSBAND: Why do you not come
home? You left me for ten days only, and
you now have been from home more than
two weeks. In that long time, only sent
me one short note a few cold words and
a check for money, which I did not require.

I agree with BettyO. That last line tells you its a fake right there, and probably written by a man. How many of you ladies would write a line like that? Big Grin

You folks have me laughing. Yes, the prosecution introduced this at the trial. Both of you are correct.

Strange....

Who was "Grey Medock"?

RE: Assassination Trivia - BettyO - 04-12-2013 08:44 PM

I know Grey Medoc was a Thoroughbred Race Horse in the early to mid 1840s.... Rolleyes

You have the right species, Betty. But I'm thinking of a different horsie that belonged to someone related to the assassination story.

Wild guess - A horse of Squire Gardiner?

RE: Assassination Trivia - Dave Taylor - 04-12-2013 09:16 PM

Afraid not, Joe.

Captain Rath had a grey horse in later life which was struck and killed by a street car.... was it Rath who owned the animal?

Tragic story, Betty. No Grey Medock did not belong to Rath. His owner was connected to Booth's escape.

Richard Stuart?

RE: Assassination Trivia - Gene C - 04-13-2013 06:56 AM

This is the second thread mentioning a suspicious activety involving a streetcar. (see "Dr. Mudd's Name")
And just last week someone at the Public Library had mis shelved Ray Neff's book. Coincidental...I think not.
(actually I have given this some thought)

RE: Assassination Trivia - BettyO - 04-13-2013 07:29 AM

Was it Thomas Jones' horse? The animal whom Booth rode down the cliff at Dent's Meadow?

RE: Assassination Trivia - Dave Taylor - 04-13-2013 08:59 AM

Neither one of those. Booth never rode this horse. It just belonged to an escape route person. Betty your guess of Jones is warm.

Samuel Cox's animal?

Correct, Laurie! Here's an abstract from the Port Tobacco Times regarding Grey Medock's talent:
