Pardon me - Gene C - 09-12-2012 11:21 AM We have all read that President Lincoln pardoned soldiers for sleeping on pickett duty or desertion. Any records or knowledge of Jefferson Davis doing the same? RE: Pardon me - HerbS - 09-14-2012 08:13 AM Gene-I am still working on this.It is mentioned in the Davis Papers that he "softened up"in later stages of the war and granted pardons. How many I still don't know. FDR-3687 pardons-Grant-1332 pardons-A.Johnson-654 pardons***Lincoln 343 pardons.I am stil on it. RE: Pardon me - Gene C - 09-14-2012 08:35 AM thanks Herb, I had no idea Grant gave so many pardons RE: Pardon me - HerbS - 09-14-2012 02:04 PM Gene-Here is what I found thus far---Davis-Pardoned many soldiers for Dissertion and Draft Dodgers. He gave pardons to soldiers who appealed the Death Sentence directly to him! This all from Rice University and the Jefferson Davis Papers. The Historian who writes most favorable-Michael Griffith. RE: Pardon me - Gene C - 09-14-2012 02:21 PM Thanks, this has got to be a tough issue for any president or general to have to deal with. He is rather known for his pardons! |
