Job offer from the NY Herald - Angela - 09-04-2016 07:56 AM

Ok, this is me being lazy.

In 1956, Robert Hansenr wrote an article titled "Mr. Lincoln visits Richmond" in which he claims that the NY Herald posted a humorous job offer for Lincoln as a war correspondent after Lincoln had started sending dispatches from City Point.

Sadly, Hanser did not give an edition and I have now gone through two full issues from the week in question without luck.
My eyes are getting tired and I was wondering if anybody happens to know the date on which this was posted?

The quote Hanser used is "at a salary of one hundred dollars a week, his rations and a fresh horse every six months".

Angela,

I did a quick search and found the article you were looking for:

Thank you so much, Dave! Can't believe I went through the paper and overlooked it!

Angela,

I'm happy to help.

I use the website GenealogyBank.com for my newspaper searches. It is a subscription based site, but I find that the annual cost is worth it as I use it all the time when researching. It allows you to do a plethora of different types of searches. I logged in and selected the state of New York and then specifically the New York Herald. Then I made my date range April of 1865 and did a keyword search for "rations". The article popped right up. If you find yourself doing a lot of newspaper searches during your research, a subscription GenealogyBank is something I would think about purchasing.

Dave,

thank you for the advice!
I really think you are right - I had previously hoped I could do with the LoC collection of the newspapers, especially since they have them turned into searchable pdf as well. But if the scan isn't all that good, a lot of words simply are not picked up.
I also used "rations" as well as "salary" and did not get any matches for April 4th...so it appears genealogybank.com is a much better way to go.
Before I get the next headache reading such wall of texts, I shall heed your advice!

This site is so great, always a wealth of information. First time on in quite a while and something of interest on the first click! Thanks to both of you for this!

I have been working on a project related to Lincoln's visit to Richmond (though it is on hiatus now, like many of my other projects). This is item is new to me and will make a great little addition lending some context and even a little humor. My time, for various reasons, has been (and is currently) very limited for history related projects. Hopefully this will change in the late fall.

I look forward to sharing some of my in progress projects with the group when they are more fleshed out.

Cheers everyone!

Can't wait to hear what kind of project you are going to do!
As for your statement ("this site is so great") - could not agree more! If it weren't for all the nice people who provide all the help and Roger who keeps this running so smoothly, I could not have learned half of what I did!

And just to add a little something - this quote I posted earlier I found in a book titled "Lincoln's Greatest Journey: Sixteen Days that Changed a Presidency, March 24 - April 8, 1865" from Noah Andre Trudeau - a great read! I will post more on it in the book thread once I finished...only a few more pages to go.
