Olivia de Havilland has starred in so many wonderful movies - of course, Gone with the Wind; The Heiress; In This Our Life with Bette Davis and Hattie McDaniel; Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte - again with Bette Davis; They Died with Their Boots On; again with Hattie McDaniel; Charge of the Light Brigade - both with leading man, Erroll Flynn - love to watch her! But for all of her many accomplishments on screen, she will always remain the quintessential "Melanie Wilkes".... She was just 23 years old in 1939-- three years younger than Vivien Leigh, who was 26 at the time. I never would have known that the way they played their characters. Interesting info, Paige RE: Olivia de Havilland Celebrating 100th Birthday - LincolnMan - 06-22-2016 11:50 AM More power to her! I was surprised the first time I heard about this too, Gene. I agree-- the part of Melanie seemed so much older than the part of Scarlett. RE: Olivia de Havilland Celebrating 100th Birthday - BettyO - 06-22-2016 03:01 PM Olivia's younger sister, the late Joan de Havilland Fontaine, (deceased 2013) was also a superb actress. She played the young second Mrs. de Winter in Rebecca with Vivian Leigh's lover, Sir Lawrence Olivier as husband Maxim de Winter; she also starred as Jane Eyre in the film of the same name alongside Orson Welles as Mr. Rochester and with Cary Grant in Suspicion.... RE: Olivia de Havilland Celebrating 100th Birthday - Linda Anderson - 07-01-2016 06:42 PM "Revisiting one of her most famous roles, de Havilland explained why she went for the role of Melanie Hamilton from Gone With The Wind, and not Scarlett O'Hara that many top actresses were vying for. 'Scarlett did not interest me as she epitomized the 'New Woman' who was self-sustaining, like myself. Melanie, on the other hand, was more traditional,' she explained. 'Most of all, I wanted to be part of Gone With The Wind as I sensed that the film would have a much longer life than others - perhaps as long as five years!' she quipped."
