Mary Surratt - Arrest Record. - SSlater - 04-22-2016 11:02 PM

I was looking for "Summers" Arrest and I found this. (I never looked for her)

U. S. Civil War Prisoners of War Records 1861 - 1865
Mrs. M. E. Surratt, keeper Board. House, Wash. D. C. April 17, 1865
Captured - Washington, D.C.
(Next Line) Miss Annie Surratt, Wash. D.C.
On the line with Annie is: To Custody Col. Baker, Order of Secy. of War Apr. 30, 1865. Then a Note: Released unconditionally (unreadable) July 1865.
I'm guessing that the "To Custody" pertains to Mary and the "Released" note applies to Annie.

There's another notation next to Annie's name reading "[illegible to me] May 31, 1865," which is the day Annie was actually released from the Old Capitol. Perhaps the July date refers to her ceasing to attend her mother at the Arsenal after Mary's execution.

The April 30 date would correspond with Mary's transfer from the Old Capitol to the Arsenal.

Wonderful research, John and Susan!

While looking for that - I found the list for POW's at West's Buildings Hospital which lists Powell as a POW/Nurse -

I cut out the portion related to Powell -

[attachment=2245]

It states: "L. T. Powell, Private, 2nd Florida, Company I, captured Gettysburg, PA, July 4th, (to be exchanged at City Point, VA - [currently Hopewell, VA - about 30 minutes south of Richmond, VA] for POW exchange or transfer to another Northern prison camp?!?) escaped September 8, 1863."

This is somewhat puzzling. Other military records at the National Archives state that Powell was captured on July 3rd, 1863. And what is with the "exchange?" Why wasn't he simply shipped from Baltimore to another prison camp? More mystery.....
