You got it! The description is in John Fitch's Annals of the Army of the Cumberland and is part of an intercepted letter by an unnamed Confederate officer who was writing about the comings and goings of various Confederate officers and their wives. Emily was staying in Athens, TN at the time, as the letter mentions.

It's abolitionist Ottilie Assing, who may have had a romantic relationship with Frederick Douglass.

Very good, Steve! Kudos. Indeed it is Ottilie Davida Assing.

Eva talked about her here.

Very good, Anita! Kudos. We have discussed Catherine Clinton on the forum, especially regarding her book entitled "Mrs. Lincoln: A Life."

There is a very brief interview with her here.

Thanks Roger. I have her book "Mrs. Lincoln: A Life" and recommend it. Here's a longer video clip on youtube where she comments on Mrs. Lincoln's life. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=36&v=_KD_gal2Bx4
