I've got some newspaper articles where Willets repeats the story pretty much as described on the auction site. Willets was a colonel in the 12th New Jersey and was discharged from the army in 1864 due to battle wounds.

Wonder what makes it a "target" pistol? Was it the length of the barrel?
Obviously such a pistol would have been impractical for his use in the assassination- too large to conceal as easily. Also, it appears Booth was no stranger in handling firearms (if the account is to be taken as factual).
