New Orleans Fun! - Jim Page - 08-06-2015 06:27 PM A year or so ago, a New Orleans ad agency emailed me because they wanted to use an old family photo from my blog in a TV/Web commercial for the New Orleans Times Picayune newspaper. Here's the commercial (finally), and at the 32-second mark, that's my mom, me (thin-striped shirt and glasses), and my brother in front of the Cafe Du Monde in the French Quarter, in 1964: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZDeF2L8-I0 Those were some fun days! Living there was a blast and I guess that's what got me into playing music, which I still do . . . badly!!! -Jim RE: New Orleans Fun! - L Verge - 08-06-2015 07:30 PM That's cool, Jim. Have you read Gary Krist's book, Empire of Sin: A Story of Sex, Jazz, Murder, and the Battle for Modern New Orleans? It's set in the early-1900s and focuses on the social and cultural struggles that the city went through as its "elite" struggled to get control over the elements of vice. Really interesting, especially the history of jazz portions. I hung out with many of the old jazz players at Preservation Hall, who taught me a lot about music and told me lots of tall tales! --Jim RE: New Orleans Fun! - Jim Garrett - 08-07-2015 06:38 AM That is a great commercial. The Times Picayune is a legendary newspaper. I have a cookbook from them published about 100 years ago. I will atest that the young man is the thin striped shirt and glasses is a fine man today full of style, spirit, and a heart as big as the vieux carre. RE: New Orleans Fun! - Jim Page - 08-07-2015 07:46 AM Jim, you make me blush! Thank you, my good friend. --Jim RE: New Orleans Fun! - L Verge - 08-07-2015 08:49 AM (08-06-2015 07:40 PM)Jim Page Wrote:(08-06-2015 07:30 PM)L Verge Wrote: Have you read Gary Krist's book, Empire of Sin: A Story of Sex, Jazz, Murder, and the Battle for Modern New Orleans? RE: New Orleans Fun! - Eva Elisabeth - 08-07-2015 09:17 AM Somehow the photo of these youngsters plus mom looks pretty up-to-date as the fashion is (again). [attachment=1771] RE: New Orleans Fun! - Rsmyth - 08-07-2015 11:38 AM Jim can still get into those clothes! RE: New Orleans Fun! - Jim Page - 08-07-2015 01:30 PM Thanks, Laurie! You know how much I'll enjoy that! And Eva, my mom always was stylishly dressed. Of course, she bought the clothes for my brother and me when we were that age, so we looked nice most of the time. Rich, I wish I could fit into to those clothes!!! I was upset at being a string-bean the first half of my life, and then I had my thyroid removed. It was the beginning of a whole new adventure in clothes buying for me, I can tell you!!! --Jim |
