Old News from 2012 - L Verge - 06-28-2015 08:01 PM I don't know how I missed this three years ago, unless the D.C. papers and media didn't carry it. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2012/01/huntington_discovers_original.html Wonder if any of the checks are still on display anywhere? RE: Old News from 2012 - RJNorton - 06-29-2015 04:27 AM Regarding Lincoln's check the article says, "The check, for $800, was written to "self" and drawn on the First National Bank of Washington, D.C. According to Eiler, the check was reportedly used to get cash to pay debts ran up by his wife, who was known to be a big spender." Is that true? Did Abraham know before he was assassinated? I thought I had once read that Abraham died not knowing of the debts run up by Mary. Maybe I missed something? RE: Old News from 2012 - Eva Elisabeth - 06-29-2015 05:12 PM Here's a different explanation: "Each month Lincoln wrote a check for about $800, according to Daniel Stowell, the director and editor of the Papers of Abraham Lincoln. 'This was probably groceries and necessaries,' Mr. Stowell said. 'He obviously didn't pay any rent, but he did have horses to maintain for carriage and they had to be fed, so that's perhaps the equivalent of a car payment.'" http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052970204630904577056561674231688 |
