Now that's a sneaky answer, Roger, 'cause all military folk are civilians at some point in their life. Assuming that this person is tied to Lincoln in some respect, was he military or civilian at the time of their interaction?

Both.

Reminds me of Mark Twain.

RE: Who is this person? - RJNorton - 01-12-2018 04:36 PM

I am sorry, Anita, but it's not Mark Twain.

RE: Who is this person? - L Verge - 01-12-2018 04:37 PM

I can see that profile attached to a military uniform, but can't finish the connection.

Hint #1: This is a person who has been mentioned on the forum.

Charles Kellogg?

RE: Who is this person? - RJNorton - 01-12-2018 06:00 PM

I am sorry, Michael, but it's not Charles Kellogg.

Hint #2: At the time this man's relief sculpture portrait was made, another one was also made of his wife:

'both civilian and military' ... so maybe involved with War Dept or Indian administration ? (and a Mark Twain impersonator)

... on the other hand could be nothing whatsoever to do with my above post ... Henry Sands Brooks (supplier of uniforms as well as gentlemens attire) and wife Lavinia?

RE: Who is this person? - RJNorton - 01-12-2018 07:00 PM

That is a thoughtful guess, Michael, but incorrect. The person is more well-known than Henry Sands Brooks.

Wild guess - Lloyd George?

Or John Gutzon de la Mothe Borglum?

RE: Who is this person? - RJNorton - 01-13-2018 06:04 AM

I am sorry, Eva, but it is neither of those people.

Hint #3: The sculpted portraits were made in 1871.

Hint #3.5: The wife, as well as the husband, have been discussed on this forum.

Larkin G. Mead and the lady is Mary Harlan Lincoln.
( Please save the applause ... Australians are too big-headed as it is)

RE: Who is this person? - RJNorton - 01-13-2018 06:36 AM

Kudos, Michael! Indeed the lady is Mary Harlan Lincoln. But the man is not Larkin Mead. Mead, the designer of the Lincoln Tomb, is the man who created the two sculpted portraits. So who is the man in the initially posted image?
