Thanks, Linda. I really like Irving Stone's writing style and highly recommend this book as a good read.

When I saw this photo the first time, it slightly gave me the creeps, especially look of these eyes. Seemed so cold to me. As a child it would have scared me.

Eva...I thought the same thing...YIKES!!

She looks young. Fanny Seward?

That is really a good try, Eva, but it's not Fanny.

Brilliant, Gene! You win one dance with her.

Gosh, I would never have guessed Kate Chase...that photo does not resemble her at all, imo!

I agree, Toia. There is a photo I am much more used to seeing as well as the one I posted here:

When I read American Queen, I was also surprised to see this photo identified as a young Kate. Later on in the book, there is a photo with her younger sister. It had me wondering if this photo wasn't really of that sister. The facial structure just seems more in sinc. But, I'm not going to argue with the White House.

I wouldn't have recognized her either! Kudos to Gene! In any case it's a beautiful photo and young lady! She looks as if she had a short (and fashionable, modern) haircut, would you think she had? How old was she (probably) when the photo was taken?

She was certainly a very pretty young woman in her heyday no doubt about that!
