John Linden Roll (son of John Eddy Roll) sitting on the sofa the Lincolns gave the Rolls when they departed Springfield for Washington? Fido is out of the picture but you can see his shadow by the girl's feet.

Well, Rob, I have no clue on this, but because of what you are working on, I'll guess a young Ida Tarbell, and her brother, Will.

Shucks, Roger. I knew if anyone would get it, it would be you. I guess I'm too predictable. It is Tarbell and Will. I found the picture in the collection of the Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America at the Radcliffe Institute. I got some doctoral dissertations the other day and one mentioned some Tarbell papers at Harvard (which I think was her manuscript for The Nationalizing of Business). I looked and found a number of pictures, including these.

Here is a picture of Tarbell as a baby with her mother, Esther.

Here is another picture of Tarbell, her sister, Sara and their brother, Will.

When Will nearly drowned, it was because Ida was conducting a "science" experiment. She was standing next to a creek with Will, who was a baby, and wondered if he could float. She picked him up and threw him in the creek. The only thing that saved him was his screams of terror and the fact that he was wearing a blouse, which blew up around him, keeping his head above water.

Hint #1 She was born in 1788 and in 1806 at age 18, opened a private school and taught there.
