However, Tarbell is talking about seeing Lincoln in person, not through the photographer's lens. Note "the living man himself."

NO, she was talking about "see[ing] the great soul of Lincoln in Barnard's statue."

In the statue photograph that I saw, President Lincoln's face looked like it was created out of volcano lava.

David,

You don't like it. Big surprise. I'm too busy working on something that matters to play semantics with you.

Who wrote about Tarbell, "I wanted to put her under a little obligation to me and if her letters since are anything I have succeeded."?

Samuel McClure?

Good guess Roger, but it's not him. I completely forgot to mention I would prefer no Googling, but if anyone did that it won't be a disqualifier.

Clue: The letter writer felt the need to explain his actions to the recipient.

No idea - William E. Barton?

RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia - Rob Wick - 10-14-2023 08:55 AM

Sorry Roger, but it isn't Barton. I really don't have too many clues that won't immediately give it away, so I will give one more and then if no one guesses correctly, I will give it away.

He was very close to Lincoln.

Herndon?

RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia - Rob Wick - 10-14-2023 10:14 AM

Logical guess, but it isn't Herndon.

Roland W Diller?

RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia - Rob Wick - 10-14-2023 03:46 PM

Anita,

Not Diller, but that's also logical.

Joshua Speed?

RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia - Rob Wick - 10-14-2023 07:08 PM

Sorry, Roger, but it's not Speed. I think I will call it. It was Robert Todd Lincoln. Lincoln was writing John Hay explaining why he gave Tarbell the photo that was used in her series on Abraham Lincoln in McClure's. I got the letter from Jason Emerson who discussed it in his blog on his website.
