I recall that 'screw loose' when I was researching (I.e. google) Tarbell and Pennsylvania.
Something to do with a lunatic idea .
I just have to back track ... might take a few years.

Guess I will go ahead and call this. The answer is George Grey Barnard, whose statue of Lincoln was loudly criticized by, among others, Robert Todd Lincoln. It had worldwide ramifications, given that two of the statues are in the United States, and one is in Manchester, England. It was RTL who said that he believed Barnard had "a screw loose." Markham, in addition to Tarbell, wrote an article defending Barnard.

I saw the statue. I do think that the sculptor "had a screw loose" (maybe, two or three screws loose). It looks like Lincoln dressed up for a Halloween night "trick or treating." And, Lincoln might have come back to the White House with an empty bag of treats.
What did Tarbell say in her defense of Barnard?

I have to say I don't hate it. In fact, I think it comes much closer to showing us the real Lincoln than many others. By the time it came out, Robert Todd Lincoln was the unmistakable protector of his father's legacy, and he would do anything to keep that legacy in the hagiographic. To me, it's interesting that Tarbell was willing to take such a public stand, given that RTL provided her with the earliest known photo of Lincoln for her McClure's article, and she generally didn't want to do anything to upset him. I have never heard what, if anything, he thought of her article.

I disagree. Several photographs of Lincoln show his great soul. This statue does not.

Art, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. There is certainly nothing wrong with expressing the opinion that you don't like something. However, Tarbell is talking about seeing Lincoln in person, not through the photographer's lens. Note "the living man himself."
