Newspaper Comic Srips - Life of Lincoln - Gene C - 01-11-2015 07:54 AM Newspaper comic strip collection on the life of Abraham Lincoln. Not sure how old this is, or what newspapers it may be from, but it's interesting. https://archive.org/details/lifeofabrahamlin00mans RE: Newspaper Comic Srips - Life of Lincoln - Eva Elisabeth - 01-11-2015 09:30 AM Love such "history comics", thanks Gene! RE: Newspaper Comic Srips - Life of Lincoln - LincolnMan - 01-11-2015 11:11 AM The book cover has "1905" on it- which may be the publication date? Nice drawings. Reminds me of today's graphic novels. RE: Newspaper Comic Srips - Life of Lincoln - Gene C - 01-11-2015 09:21 PM Did a little bit of checking, here is a short bio on the author J Carroll Mansfield http://www.biglittlebooks.com/worldsyn.html one of the strips posted has a handwritten date of 4-8-26 RE: Newspaper Comic Srips - Life of Lincoln - STS Lincolnite - 01-12-2015 06:01 PM Gene, this is great!! Thanks for posting. I agree with Bill that it is reminiscent of today's graphic novels. This is certainly a good way to engage readers of all ages. It kind of looks like these were collected together into a book. Is it possible they were orginally serial newspaper cartoons? RE: Newspaper Comic Srips - Life of Lincoln - BettyO - 01-12-2015 06:37 PM I noted that a few of the cartoons said "McClure's Syndicate" or some such thing about "McClure's Magazine...." Is it possible they were orginally serial newspaper cartoons? Yes, they also were later printed into a book. They have also been reprinted, but my luck with quality reprints hasn't been good when it comes to books with lots of pictures and illustrations. http://www.amazon.com/Life-Abraham-Lincoln-Classic-Reprint/dp/B009617YXU/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1421111563&sr=8-15&keywords=j+carroll+mansfield You can probably find an old original copy for around $20, but the paper is usually of poorer quality. McClure Syndicate was the first American newspaper syndicate according to Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McClure_Newspaper_Syndicate |
