I agree with you, Gene. For example, Crook takes the view that Johnson never saw the recommendation for mercy for Mary Surratt, and he maintains that Johnson would have granted it had he seen it. Crook argues that Stanton was responsible for withholding the plea from Johnson's sight. Crook felt the criticism Johnson received for Mary's execution was unfair and unwarranted.

I go back and forth over who to pin the execution of Mary Surratt on. Today I feel Stanton was the culprit.Dodgy

I liked Crook's book, but he was one of the few to have a good opinion of Johnson. I don't remember any strong negative comments in his book about any of the presidents

Actually, Cleydael was their summer chateau... A small painting of the Cleydael in Belgium was hanging on the wall in the library there, and close inspection identified it.
Is it this one?

This is a sad note, but the Coincidence is overwhelming, to anyone knowledgeable of Booth's escape. On Jan 1, 2015 there were two pictures published in the Fredericksburg newspaper, in the Obituaries, they were side by side. One was Janice R McDaniel. the other was Mannie J.Crismond. I regret that I have missed talking to either one.
(Janice was married to Leroy M. McDaniel and Mannie was married to William Crismond.) I will research their linage.

He spent a significant part of his book, "Through Five Administrations", on the time Johnson was president. Four chapters, and it's very interesting

His comments about Tad Lincoln (in chapter 4) are also interesting.

Thank you. It is a great read--hard to put down. I was surprised, however, to read that Lincoln was a hearty eater. Hard to picture.

Juan, I have read that AL had a healthy appetite in Springfield but I agree with you that after he became president that changed.

Breakfast was a cup of coffee and a boiled egg, lunch was an apple and a cup of tea or occasionally a slice of bread and jam with milk. He liked bacon, but I don't think he ate it frequently.

Dinner was whenever Mary could bully him into sitting down at the table, and even then he was said to mostly pick at his plate, slipping tidbits to Jip the dog or other family pets.

He really did a terrific job of developing Robert Todd Lincoln Beckwith and after reading about him you feel like you could have known him. Beckwith walks into his attorney's office bragging he's going to be a father. Well maybe his wife is going to be a mother, but..................

"mamma's baby, daddy's maybe"

Sgt. Cobb allowed the assassin and a co-conspirator to pass through his post at the Navy Yard Bridge. Did he get into trouble with the military for his actions? After all, he had strick orders which he violated.
