The Young Eagle - Gene C - 02-04-2014 09:43 PM

Written by Kenneth Winkle. Well written, flows well. While it is about Abraham Lincoln, it is more about the times and places he lived before he became president. Great back ground info about the economy and society during this time period, especially in New Salem and Springfield. Full of interesting information about how life was different back then, and how it was changing. 315 pages with lots of footnotes. A worthwhile addition to your Lincoln library.

Gene: not having read the book- nor knowing anything about it until you mentioned it- why is it entitled 'The Young Eagle?'

Good question Bill.

From the introduction
"Five years before his death in 1887, Joshua Speed, the truest friend that Abraham Lincoln ever made, pondered the unfathomable achievements of the sixteenth president. "For me to have lived to see such a man rise from point to point, and from place to place, filling all the places to which he was called, with honor and distinction, until he reached the presidential chair in the most trying times that any ruler had, seems to me', he marveled, 'more like fiction than fact'. Watching Lincoln rise, he likened his friend to a 'young eagle', stretching his wings to catch the wind that was America and leaving the world below him to soar to the horizon beyond."

Just noticed there are several "good" condition copies of this book on Amazon for $ 0.01.

It's well worth it, even if it sits around for a few months before you can get to it.

On some of these that are marked library copies, they frequently have the dust jacket and are protected by a nice clear book cover.
Just be sure to read the "condition - learn more" comments before you chose your copy.
