According to Randall's diary entry for September 22, 1942: Thanks Rob, That's a great prize! I was hoping for one of Mrs. Sandburg's goats. RE: A Sandburg Stumper - Rob Wick - 05-03-2019 03:25 PM Try to answer this without looking it up. The University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana holds the largest collection of Sandburgiana in the world. However, it ranks third in the number of collections that has material related to Sandburg. In other words, while it has the largest collection of Sandburg material by volume in its collection, there are two other facilities that, while not having the total number of papers, has more collections that has material related to Sandburg. What are the first and second? Best Rob RE: A Sandburg Stumper - RJNorton - 05-03-2019 04:25 PM I have no idea, Rob, but I'll stick with Illinois' locations. I'll guess Knox College and Northwestern University. RE: A Sandburg Stumper - Rob Wick - 05-03-2019 05:31 PM Illinois would be the logical guess Roger, but neither are it. Best Rob RE: A Sandburg Stumper - LincolnMan - 05-04-2019 05:43 AM No idea either. Carl Sandburg College? RE: A Sandburg Stumper - Gene C - 05-04-2019 06:54 AM Do goats count as Sandburgiana? (That would be a great name for a goat farm) I'll guess the Carl Sandburg home in North Carolina. RE: A Sandburg Stumper - Rob Wick - 05-04-2019 09:01 AM Sorry guys, but neither answer is correct. Clue: The top facility has 12,000 comic book titles. Best Rob RE: A Sandburg Stumper - Joe Di Cola - 05-04-2019 11:48 AM Is it the Newberry Library in Chicago? RE: A Sandburg Stumper - Rob Wick - 05-04-2019 12:10 PM Logical guess Joe, but it isn't the Newberry. Both libraries are not in Illinois, or the Midwest, for that matter. Best Rob RE: A Sandburg Stumper - RJNorton - 05-04-2019 12:44 PM The University of North Carolina? RE: A Sandburg Stumper - Rob Wick - 05-04-2019 01:00 PM Sorry , but that's not it either, Roger. The top facility has close ties to Thomas Jefferson. Best Rob RE: A Sandburg Stumper - RJNorton - 05-04-2019 01:16 PM University of Virginia? RE: A Sandburg Stumper - Rob Wick - 05-04-2019 02:12 PM Logical guess, Roger, but incorrect. Best Rob RE: A Sandburg Stumper - L Verge - 05-04-2019 02:46 PM This is probably very dumb, but I associate Jefferson with the original Library of Congress, so that is my wild stab in the dark. RE: A Sandburg Stumper - Rob Wick - 05-04-2019 03:07 PM Laurie is correct. The Library of Congress has the largest number of collections that have Sandburg material. I'm at work, so I don't have the exact number, but when I get home I can get it. Edit: The LOC has 111 collections that has some sort of Sandburg material. Some of the more important would include the David C. Mearns Papers (Mearns was manuscript curator at the LOC and a very close friend of Sandburg. In fact, when Sandburg was in Washington he stayed with Mearns) as well as the James G. and Ruth Painter Randall Papers. Now, what is the second one? Best Rob |
