Haven't got mine yet--looking forward to it! I finished Kathy's book a couple of days ago and really enjoyed it.
David Rankin Barbee in his interview with Dr. Reginald Tonry (Anna Surratt's son) reported that Dr. Tonry made a similar remark: "When Mrs. Surratt moved to Washington and took the town house on H Street, she did not open a boardinghouse and she never ran an establishment of that sort." ("His Mother's Memories").

We heard the same thing from another Surratt descendant. It took pulling out the copy of her advertisement in the D.C. papers to convince them otherwise. She certainly did not open her doors to the Holohans, Nora, Apollonia Dean, or even Weichmann and welcome them in for free.
There was nothing disgraceful about running a boardinghouse in the 19th century (or later). In fact, for a widowed or single lady, it was one of only a few respectable options for them to earn a living.

I'm surprised that some of you have not received your October newsletters yet. They left Surratt House last Thursday, and I received my copy at home this past Monday. They are sent first class mail, but I guess I'm expecting too much from the USPS.

Thanks very much, Roger. I was stunned by that denial too. I guess the family had moved up in the world and didn't want to be associated with a boarding house,
even the one where President Lincoln died.

Again the Surratt Courier is wonderful, and kudos to Susan H. for her article entitled "The Last Years of Sarah Slater." It contains lots of information about Sarah's 20th century life and activities. Fascinating!

I;m not sure that we will be selling the new Edwin Booth book, Susan. Not because it's not worthy, but our small shop is so crowded now that we are having problems with finding space for new items.
Thomas and Eva, Hopefully your issues will arrive soon. I can't understand why Thomas's has not gotten to him (did you remember to renew your dues?). Nearly 1000 of the copies left my office on the Monday before Thanksgiving. Delays to Germany I can understand, but not to another post office right within the state of Maryland.
