1) a high school degree
2) a college degree
3) ?

Nobel prize?

RE: A Sandburg Stumper - Rob Wick - 10-04-2012

And you said it was too hard a question. Smile

You are correct Bill.

Sandburg quit school after eighth grade and never looked back. He attended Lombard College but never graduated.

The one sticking point that angered Sandburg throughout his life was that he never received the Nobel Prize for Literature. Even John Steinbeck and Ernest Hemingway both said that Sandburg deserved it more than they did.

Bill, your prize will be the Nobel Prize for Trivia, if it ever gets invented.

RE: A Sandburg Stumper - Rob Wick - 10-05-2012

Who said to Sandburg:

"You're just the boy to do this--to understand Abe and make him real in real times when Life went on so differently."

I have no idea, but I'll guess Ida Tarbell.

RE: A Sandburg Stumper - LincolnMan - 10-06-2012

Alfred Harcourt?

Bill,

You've got it right. Good job.

You get to wear the decoder ring for at least another week.

Been a while since we dipped into a Sandburg Stumper, so here's one.

As a journalist, Carl Sandburg reviewed movies for the Chicago Daily News. What movie on Abraham Lincoln did he review?

RE: A Sandburg Stumper - LincolnMan - 11-18-2012

Abraham Lincoln by D.W. Griffith?

RE: A Sandburg Stumper - Rob Wick - 11-18-2012

Good guess, Bill, but that's not it.

Young Mr. Lincoln?

P.S. Rob, your question was nostalgic for me as during 7th and 8th grade I had an afternoon paper route delivering the Chicago Daily News to my assigned blocks in Oak Park, Illinois. Once a dog chased and tried to bite me. I told my dad I wanted to quit delivering papers, and he said, "Keep goin' son."

RE: A Sandburg Stumper - Rob Wick - 11-19-2012

Neat story Roger, but it wasn't Young Mr. Lincoln.

Clue #1. The movie is not well-known.

the Dramatic Life of Abraham Lincoln (1924) ?

One of Sanburg's first jobs was with the Chicago Daily News so it needs to be earlier than the 1930's. He moved from the Chicago area to Michigan in 1930?
(he was born in 1878)
