RE: Trivia Advent Calendar - J. Beckert - 12-05-2016 12:27 PM

Leave it to the former school teacher to be a stickler for the details! I asked what and where and you've nailed them both. Nice try, Thomas, but you didn't go quite far enough.

Notoriously thrifty, RTL brought furniture he'd put in storage from the Lincoln home in Springfield after he'd completed construction on Hildene. This piece is believed to have been in Lincoln's home. And it is in the upstairs parlor. And I did touch it.

Another example of his thrift is in the actual construction. The architect stipulated the library be trimmed with mahogany, but RTL used local poplar, treated with a mahogany stain.

To be fair, I will transfer the point I got yesterday to Thomas and Laurie gets the point for this one. Looks like a 3 way tie so far.

Laurie 2
Roger 2
Thomas 2

Now here's the evil deed....

I heard from a curator at Hildene that Joe Beckert is no longer permitted on the property...

He's not allowed unattended in Surratt House anymore, and Rick Smith is not allowed to be his "escort" through the museum. Just saying...

Ouch. I should have kept my big mouth shut. How I suffer for my obsession....

Touche, Miss Laurie. Touche.

Being I've probably exhausted this theme, here's a few shots of me making "historical connections" with RTL's telephone and telescope. Please come back tomorrow as I try to make the next installment harder than Chinese arithmetic. [attachment=2469]

Welcome back, folks. It's day 6 of the Trivia Advent Calendar fun and it's time to turn it up a notch! So far Eva and I have covered "silent witnesses", former homes and me behaving badly in museums. Now it's time to turn things around and make this year's Champ earn their chops! We have a three way tie and we need a front runner to emerge and vernichten the competition! Here's today's submission...

What is this mess???[attachment=2472]

Is that the window of opportunity that Lincoln Conspiracy theorist use to sell their outrageous books to a gullible, ignorant, and thrill seeking public.

RE: Trivia Advent Calendar - RJNorton - 12-06-2016 07:40 AM

Could it be a small part of the exterior of Tudor Hall?

RE: Trivia Advent Calendar - J. Beckert - 12-06-2016 08:29 AM

Yowza. I thought that one would take a while, but it looks like the politest man on the internet has pulled into the lead! Nice work, Roger. It is an inverted Tudor Hall.

Eva returns tomorrow. Let's see what kind of gerin schmelzgerat she brings with her.

Thomas 2

I can tell from experience that to 95% a question you expect to be difficult to figure will turn out a HIO (ask Roger what is is if you don't know), and v.v. - you can safely rely on that.

What is a "gerin schmelzgerat", Joe?

Whatever it is, this looks rather like a sofa. But - where is it, and how linked to Forum matters?

Is this the courting couch from the Edwards' home in Springfield? I have forgotten what it looked like.

RE: Trivia Advent Calendar - Eva Elisabeth - 12-07-2016 08:51 AM

Excellent guess, Roger, but I'm sorry it's not correct.

RE: Trivia Advent Calendar - Thomas Kearney - 12-07-2016 09:20 AM

It's the sofa I sat on at Belle Grove last spring

RE: Trivia Advent Calendar - J. Beckert - 12-07-2016 09:28 AM

Is it the sofa that's in the Lincoln Bedroom at the White House? Probably purchased by MTL as part of the set?

RE: Trivia Advent Calendar - RJNorton - 12-07-2016 09:32 AM

I believe there was a sofa inside the Lincoln funeral car. Is it that one?

Another guess - the sofa that Fido slept on that is now located at Hildene?
