RE: What Will You Do For Lincoln's Day ? - Eva Elisabeth - 02-17-2016 08:02 AM Thank you so much, Angela - the funeral reenactment DVD and yummy chocolate coated Lincoln cookie have arrived! I couldn't resist a smile as for the cookie being coated with Belgian chocolate (as declared in fat capitals)...seems it is time to re-read about Lincoln's ties to Belgium beyond Mary's laces (I think Brussels was the main European ambassy despite England). Enjoy! And yes, interesting connection - I am sure they meant to do that ;-) RE: What Will You Do For Lincoln's Day ? - maharba - 02-20-2016 09:15 PM When Lee surrendered at Appomatox he made a point of riding in personally and not sending a subordinate. He remembered well what his own father said about the UK surrendering to George Washington at Yorktown. That it left a bad taste in his father General Lee's mouth when the english sent in their most junior officer to surrender at Yorktown. As we arrive at Washington's birthday, I don't wonder that ere long we see, in the North, the surviving statues of Washington torn down, streets and school names changed. And the great valor of these Rebel Patriots shuttered from public view, there. RE: What Will You Do For Lincoln's Day ? - Eva Elisabeth - 02-21-2016 06:06 PM Found this video of the freedom bell with the engraved words from the Gettysburg Address dedicated to the citizens of Berlin in 1950 (see post #14) ringing (?) at noon - please skip a bit forward as in the beginning you hear the bells of a nearby church. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FeyM_AsPdrM The bell rings each day at noon, at midnight on on New Year's Eve, and additionally to commemorate special occasions, like 9/11. (It's the very place where JFK held this speech, and which is now named after him: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PUaqIOwmRm8 ) (PS: While I couldn't find an Abraham Lincoln Place, there are Abraham Lincoln Streets in Germany.) |
