This lady has been previously mentioned on this forum. In 1865, when asked if a certain individual (male) were handsome, she responded by saying in Washington she had not seen any remarkably handsome men. Who is she?

Just a guess, but Kate Chase?

Best

Anna Surratt ?

Kudos, Gene! Anna Surratt it is. On April 28, 1865, Anna was being questioned by Colonel John A. Foster. She was asked if Lewis Powell were a handsome fellow. She responded, "I would not know - I have not seen any remarkably handsome men since I have been in Washington. I didn't like him."

Willie Lincoln?

RE: Extra Credit Questions - RJNorton - 05-24-2026 04:30 PM

Congratulations to Anita! Yes, the lines are from a letter 10-year-old Willie Lincoln wrote to a friend in Springfield named Henry Remann. The letter was written on May 3, 1861. The Remanns lived down the block from the Lincolns.

Ninian Edwards home in Springfield ?

Yes, Gene! It is the Edwards' parlor where the Lincolns were married on November 4, 1842.
