Another good guess, Gene, but that isn't it.

Rob, can you say if the response you are asking about took place during Lincoln's Illinois' years?

RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia - Rob Wick - 08-13-2021 01:10 PM

Wild guess...the fact that Lincoln was actually quite seriously ill after the Gettysburg Address...much more so than the public knew.

Sorry Roger, but that's not it.

The incident with Gen. McLennan when Lincoln called at the McLennan home but the General chose not to see him?

RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia - Rob Wick - 08-13-2021 06:43 PM

Good try Mike, but that's not it.

Next clue: What Tarbell thought had happened actually hadn't. She was reacting to something else that someone said.

Does it relate to Mary Lincoln?

RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia - RJNorton - 08-14-2021 04:05 AM

That Lincoln did not appear in person before The Committee on the Conduct of the War in order to defend Mary's loyalty to the Union?

RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia - Rob Wick - 08-14-2021 06:00 AM

Mike, it doesn't have anything to do with Mary.

Sorry Roger, it isn't that.

RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia - AussieMick - 08-14-2021 06:46 AM

Did it relate to how Jefferson Davis was to be treated after the war?

RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia - Rob Wick - 08-14-2021 07:22 PM

Sorry Mike, but no.

Next clue. Tarbell said she was familiar with the main part of this story, but not the part that she was asked to comment on.

The idea that Lincoln may have supported colonization later in his Presidency than commonly thought?
