RE: Happy Birthday! - My Name Is Kate - 01-10-2014 01:34 PM Sorry I'm late wishing you a happy birthday, Eva. My mom, whose German is a little rusty (even though it is actually her first language) said that Happy Birthday in German is something like Fröhliche Geburtstag! (From what I see written above, I think she must be a little confused.) RE: Happy Birthday! - Eva Elisabeth - 01-10-2014 01:54 PM Thanks a lot, Kate, for good wishes each time is right! And for being "fröhlich" (happy), too. RE: Happy Birthday! - David Lockmiller - 02-12-2014 05:43 PM Abraham Lincoln was born 205 years ago today! RE: Happy Birthday! - L Verge - 02-12-2014 06:44 PM David, I almost posted Happy Birthday early this morning, but decided to wait to see else would remember. I can tell you that no one on my staff remembered. When I refreshed their memory, all I got was, "Oh, yeah..." RE: Happy Birthday! - brtmchl - 02-12-2014 07:06 PM Oh, yeah! Happy Birthday RE: Happy Birthday! - BettyO - 02-12-2014 07:18 PM I agree! Happy, Happy Birthday!! When I could not find any, I rechecked to make sure that Lincoln had actually been born on February 12. My memory had served me well. RE: Happy Birthday! - Gene C - 02-13-2014 12:09 PM Thanks for the thought, Roger. Fido found gratification that he was specifically mentioned before Tabby. RE: Happy Birthday! - ReignetteC - 02-13-2014 03:14 PM in the February 11, 2014 online version of USA Today there's an article titled, "Celebrate Lincoln's Birthday with Brain Teasers." See http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/02/11/abraham-lincoln-birthday-trivia/5404249/ The article lists three of "President's Lincoln's most powerful quotes": "Whenever I hear anyone arguing for slavery, I feel a strong impulse to see it tried on him personally." "If you want to test a man's character, give him power." "Most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be." Just wondering . . . so I thought I'd ask the experts (you): Are the above quotations correctly attributed to AL? Thanks! RE: Happy Birthday! - RJNorton - 02-13-2014 03:48 PM Reignette, the first one is legitimate. SOURCE: The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln edited by Roy P. Basler, Volume VIII, "Speech to One Hundred Fortieth Indiana Regiment" (March 17, 1865), p. 361. I have sure seen the other two attributed to Lincoln but have never seen an authentic source for either one. Maybe someone else will know of one. RE: Happy Birthday! - L Verge - 04-02-2014 05:46 PM I am not positive, but I believe that April 3 is the birthday of a certain Redheaded Rebel from Richmond? RE: Happy Birthday! - BettyO - 04-02-2014 07:01 PM You know.... I think it very well could be.....Thanks! |
