Good memory, Kate! The quote I think you may be thinking of is located on one of the very best Lincoln websites on the Internet - Abraham Lincoln Online operated by Rhoda and Lowell Sneller. Quoting from their website:

"As author David Mearns said of Lincoln, "If he belongs to the ages it is because he belonged to his own age, his own fellows, his own environment ... if we would honor him, recognise and understand him we must return to his [age]."

I would always ask my students,"Do the times make the man or does the man make the times"? It was always a split opinion, but it is better to have an opinion-than no opinion at all !!!! When you look at Lincoln,he had the Civil War to deal with.FDR had WW2 to win.Other Presidents have had a different crisis to deal with[poverty-economy-etc].I feel that Lincoln did a better job in his time period, than other Presidents did in thier time period.Great Job Matt-The many tasks of a teacher,is to make thier students-Think.

Herb: maybe a third choice is that both elements converge to produce something great.
