RE: Extra Credit Questions - LincolnMan - 11-25-2012 02:12 PM I suppose his odds of surviving would have been minimal given he was an adult male. Roger, what prizes do we have left in our treasure chest? RE: Extra Credit Questions - RJNorton - 11-25-2012 02:34 PM Yes, Bill, we have a free dinner for Linda at the Wok and Roll Restaurant. Jim Page won the other one on Friday. The free dinners there are now gone. RE: Extra Credit Questions - LincolnMan - 11-25-2012 02:52 PM Thanks Roger! Linda you're so lucky! RE: Extra Credit Questions - RJNorton - 11-29-2012 05:39 AM When Lincoln ran for the House of Representatives a group of Whigs collected $200 for his campaign fund. How much of the $200 did Lincoln spend? How much was returned to his supporters? RE: Extra Credit Questions - LincolnMan - 11-29-2012 08:27 AM All but seventy-five cents was returned! He spent $199.25, if my math is correct. RE: Extra Credit Questions - RJNorton - 11-29-2012 08:45 AM Kudos, Bill. He returned $199.25 to his Whig supporters. You win one barrel of cider! RE: Extra Credit Questions - LincolnMan - 11-29-2012 08:59 AM Would that be hard cider? RE: Extra Credit Questions - RJNorton - 11-29-2012 12:04 PM I am sorry, Bill. Apple cider. RE: Extra Credit Questions - LincolnMan - 12-01-2012 12:25 PM From the current issue of Civil War Times: "Civil War brews not only adjusted attitudes, but also helped fund the war through a dollar-a-keg excise tax. A levy on beer, spirits, tobacco, and other items-as well as the nation's first federal income tax-were created by President Lincoln and Congress to finance the war." In the same article it mentions that one can purchase a beer called "Antietam Ale" on tap at Brewer's Alley in Frederick, Md. It is supposed to taste like what soldiers would have had 150 years ago. A brew called "Proclamation Porter" is scheduled to be released in January. RE: Extra Credit Questions - L Verge - 12-01-2012 01:11 PM For those of you coming to the Surratt conference in March, Frederick is a little over an hour's drive north of Clinton.... It's a great town, home to a wonderful museum - National Museum of Civil War Medicine - and also close to the Monocacy Battlefield, Antietam, and Gettysburg. You can stock up on history while swigging ale. RE: Extra Credit Questions - RJNorton - 12-02-2012 02:10 PM This historian and author won a Pulitzer Prize. The photo shows him speaking in 1983. Who is he? RE: Extra Credit Questions - BettyO - 12-02-2012 02:54 PM OMG - a young Harold Holzer? With Ed Steers in the background? And looks like they are at the McNair Officer's Club..... RE: Extra Credit Questions - RJNorton - 12-02-2012 03:08 PM Good eyes, Betty! I believe that is Dr. Steers! However, the speaker is not Harold Holzer. RE: Extra Credit Questions - BettyO - 12-02-2012 03:16 PM Dr. James McPherson? |
