RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia - AussieMick - 12-29-2020 03:55 PM Of course, we're assuming that she physically visited the building. ... and that it's in the US ?. Maybe its Cuba ? RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia - Rob Wick - 12-29-2020 04:15 PM Mike, I don't know whether or not she visited it, but I can assure you it's in the United States. Best Rob RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia - Steve - 12-29-2020 04:16 PM I've consulted my trusted copy of Kathleen Brady's biography of Tarbell, which I bought to help me with Tough Tarbell trivia; and I think I might have the answer. Is it the Bonta House Hotel? Tarbell's family bought the hotel to use its materials to build their house. The building in the photograph seems to match Brady's description of the hotel. RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia - Rob Wick - 12-29-2020 04:21 PM You got it Steve. It is the Bonta House Hotel. Good job! Best Rob P.S., I should have also said no looking in Kathy's book. RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia - Steve - 12-29-2020 08:23 PM Here's a link about the restoration of Tarbell House that I found: https://oldhousesunder50k.com/old-house-saved-the-tarbell-house-of-titusville-pa/amp/ RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia - Rob Wick - 04-03-2021 06:45 PM Time once again for Tough Tarbell Trivia. Of what was Tarbell talking about when she wrote "A man who buys a ticket in a lottery must not complain if he doesn't draw the lucky number. There were some who drew lucky numbers...there were more who did not." Best Rob RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia - Steve - 04-04-2021 12:00 AM Standard Oil buying other oil companies in exchange for their own stock? RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia - RJNorton - 04-04-2021 04:14 AM Possibly a reference to Stephen Douglas in the 1860 Presidential election. Lincoln drew the lucky number because his opponents were split. Douglas did not draw a lucky number as the Democrats were divided allowing Lincoln an easy path to victory. RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia - Rob Wick - 04-04-2021 07:35 AM Sorry gentlemen. Both are good guesses, but both are incorrect. I will start clues later today. Best Rob RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia - Rob Wick - 04-04-2021 10:17 AM First clue. It has nothing to do with Standard Oil. Best Rob RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia - Rob Wick - 04-04-2021 01:02 PM Second clue. Tarbell wrote this in the 1920s. Best Rob RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia - Steve - 04-04-2021 02:00 PM People being unhappy with the actions of politicians they elected compared to their campaign promises? RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia - Rob Wick - 04-04-2021 02:09 PM Again Steve that's a logical answer, but not the one I'm seeking. Best Rob RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia - Steve - 04-05-2021 01:13 AM Being a journalist (or historian) researching a big lead which turns out to be nothing important? RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia - Rob Wick - 04-05-2021 03:46 AM Sorry Steve, but that's not it. Next clue: Tarbell wrote articles about the topic she was discussing in the letter. Best Rob |
