Does the answer have anything to do with Lincoln's patent?

RE: Extra Credit Questions - AussieMick - 04-03-2020 04:33 PM

No, Roger. It does though involve Lincoln being delayed on the James River .

And his response to the attempts to relieve the situation.

Is the person Adam Slemmer?

RE: Extra Credit Questions - AussieMick - 04-03-2020 09:56 PM

No, Steve. But this person at one point went to assist Adam Slemmer.

Israel Vogdes?

RE: Extra Credit Questions - AussieMick - 04-04-2020 04:29 PM

No, not him Steve .
The man we need was inthe navy. The mission that he was sent to help happened just before the war started.

RE: Extra Credit Questions - Steve - 04-04-2020 04:42 PM

Are you thinking of Capt. William S. Walker of the Brooklyn? I can't find any more biographical information about him besides his mission to Ft. Sumter and Ft. Pickens before the war, and that the Buchanan administration barred him from unloading any reinforcements to Ft. Pickens unless the fort was attacked.

RE: Extra Credit Questions - AussieMick - 04-04-2020 05:11 PM

No Steve. It was the Lincoln/Seward administration. ... it was to be an "army affair" ... a ship was obviously involved .... so Welles was a little annoyed, especially since he had another expedition in mind to another well known fort.

RE: Extra Credit Questions - AussieMick - 04-05-2020 04:55 PM

He chose to ignore an order that came from Lincoln, with respect to going to Fort Pickens.

Captain Henry Adams?

RE: Extra Credit Questions - AussieMick - 04-06-2020 04:46 AM

Roger, you are as close as close could be without being correct.
The person we are seeking praised Capt Adams and was later with him on the James River with Lincoln.

David Dixon Porter

RE: Extra Credit Questions - AussieMick - 04-06-2020 03:49 PM

Yes! Yes ! Yes! Well done Steve.

Apologies to you and Roger if (?) my hints were less than helpful. I kept double-checking my facts and hopefully wasnt wrong on any.

Now .... can anybody make the connection with Admiral Porter. ... trousers. ... and a vessel named "Glance " ?

RE: Extra Credit Questions - AussieMick - 04-06-2020 04:53 PM

Porter was not on the "Glance", nor was Lincoln. It was trying to help.
