Virginia C. - Gene C - 07-06-2023 09:37 AM For those of you interested, there is a book "Don't Shoot That Boy" by Thomas Lowery, that has been mentioned on the forum. http://rogerjnorton.com/LincolnDiscussionSymposium/thread-3234-post-63136.html?highlight=lowery#pid63136 It doesn't go in to much detail on the individual cases Lincoln reviewed, Steve has gone into more detail than any of the cases I remember reading about in this book. I'll dig it out and see what I can find. RE: I could freely give my life to save his. Virginia C. - Anita - 07-09-2023 06:06 PM David, a big thanks for posting the letter from the Portland Advertiser and to Steve for his amazing research. I'm looking forward to reading what became of the other men. The subject of desertion during the Civil War and the military judicial system developed to deal with it, is indeed a complex subject. |
