Gene is correct that it was George Bancroft, but before I can give you the prize, you need to answer the other parts of the question.

When did he give the speech and what was his topic?

Could it be an address about the life and charachter of Abraham Lincoln given before Congress n 1866

We have a winner! That is correct.

You win the right to be the third private citizen to address a joint session of Congress. Just call the clerks of both the House and the Senate and they will handle the details.

Good job, Gene.

Since they passed the smoking ban, do they still have joint sessions in congress?

Nice one Gene! Smile

That's like asking about sado-masochism in the legislature with all the whips there.

Lets try "2"

Make that "3", my final answer 3......

Before I can award the prize, you have to give me the titles and the year.

What! .... One was for his biography about Abraham Lincoln - the War Years, I think the war was in 1861-1865, and the other two were for poetry....Carl Sandburgs Greatest Hits, no that's not it...ugh..The Complete Poems of Carl Sandburg in 1950 and something about corn..the Corn Shuckers or Corn Huskers in 19--, all I know it was before he did the Rootabaga Stories (hey, I kept falling asleep during the show)...Wikipedia says 1918

RE: A Sandburg Stumper - Rob Wick - 09-27-2012 04:48 PM

OK, Gene, close enough.

Sandburg won a prize which was actually sponsored by the Poetry Society of America in 1919. It was for Corn Huskers. The Poetry Society was instrumental in establishing the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, so some authors count it while others don't.

The second came for Abraham Lincoln: The War Years in 1940. What made this interesting is that the Pulitzers were never awarded in biography for books about Lincoln or Washington, so he received it in history.

The third came for The Complete Poems of Carl Sandburg in 1951.

You win the Norton Prize for Trivial Excellence. See Roger.

Gene, I am sending you a $25 gift certificate good at any Steak and Ale Restaurant.

OK, since that one didn't last very long, I'll have to try and make this one more difficult.

What group made Sandburg a member to great controversy?
