Further, he said, "The most important object is the statue of Lincoln, which is placed in the center of the memorial. This portion of the memorial where the statue is placed will be unoccupied by any other object that would detract from its effectiveness and the visitor will be alone with it. RE: Lincoln Memorial, nearing 100, to get multimillion-dollar overhaul - jonathan - 03-07-2016 03:46 PM A couple of years ago, I was there the day before Thanksgiving. My hotel was only a couple of blocks from Ford's, and I headed out at first light. It was a cool clear morning, and for quite a while things were very quiet. I felt like I had free reign to do as I pleased. A few cars were out, the occasional jogger, but not much. Walking alone down past the Washington Monument towards the Lincoln Memorial, it's easy to consider how nearly perfect it is, the way he just relaxes by the river, watching. Only a handful of people were around, so I was able to get a couple of nice pictures with few/no people in them. I know work needs to be done, and I'm sure this project will be undertaken with a tremendous amount of thought and planning. But it's a beautiful, classy structure, and the way it sits by itself alone and dignified is just about perfect. I really hope they don't screw that up. |
