RE: Who is this lady? - RJNorton - 04-18-2016 11:16 AM Gene's answer seems logical to me, so I will switch and second his reply. RE: Who is this lady? - Eva Elisabeth - 04-18-2016 02:22 PM Yes, a logical and brilliant guess, Gene, but kudos to your original guess, Roger - it is indeed the Shenandoah! The Shenandoah was purchased by the Confederacy in 1864 for the task to strike at the Union's economy and "seek out and utterly destroy" Union merchant ships in areas yet undisturbed. She would become one of the most feared commerce raiders in the Confederate Navy. She surrendered on the River Mersey, Liverpool, England, on November 6, 1865. Her flag was the last sovereign Confederate flag to be officially furled. The Shenandoah had also fired the last shot of the American Civil War. During 12 1⁄2 months of 1864–1865 the ship undertook commerce raiding resulting in the capture and sinking or bonding of thirty-eight Union merchant vessels, mostly New Bedford whaleships. The story about her surrender reads like a seafarers' tale: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/CSS_Shenandoah RE: Who is this lady? - Eva Elisabeth - 04-28-2016 01:37 PM Since ships are traditionally "shes" - who is she? [attachment=2251] RE: Who is this lady? - RJNorton - 04-28-2016 02:35 PM The Wayanda? RE: Who is this lady? - Eva Elisabeth - 04-28-2016 03:17 PM Great guess, Roger, but, sorry, not the Wayanda. RE: Who is this lady? - Eva Elisabeth - 04-29-2016 01:19 AM Hint #1: It was an US army vessel. RE: Who is this lady? - RJNorton - 04-29-2016 04:41 AM The USS Pocahontas? RE: Who is this lady? - Eva Elisabeth - 04-29-2016 05:50 AM Another good idea, Roger, but not her either. Hint #2: You mentioned this ship not too long ago. RE: Who is this lady? - RJNorton - 04-29-2016 06:18 AM The Harriet Lane? RE: Who is this lady? - Eva Elisabeth - 04-29-2016 06:24 AM Very good again, Roger, but not the "Harriet Lane" either. Hint #3: Regarding ships are "shes" - think transgender... RE: Who is this lady? - Gene C - 04-29-2016 06:41 AM I didn't know Bruce Jenner had a ship named after him. RE: Who is this lady? - Eva Elisabeth - 04-29-2016 08:01 AM Hint #4: She was named after a male whom Abraham Lincoln appointed to an office - but you will know the ship for a very different reason. RE: Who is this lady? - Eva Elisabeth - 04-29-2016 01:08 PM Hint #5: This question would also qualify for "Assassination Trivia". RE: Who is this lady? - RJNorton - 04-29-2016 03:15 PM Even with all the clues, I am still clueless on this one. RE: Who is this lady? - Eva Elisabeth - 04-29-2016 03:40 PM Thanks for letting me know - actually you "inspired" me with a guess on another ship. Hint #6: This vessel was on duty in your very vicinity. |
