It's amazing that I have won any of these because I am really terrible at any trivia question - and throw in a photo to identify and I'm totally out of it...Maybe the cold that has laid me low for six weeks now brought me extra brain power. RE: Trivia Advent Calendar - Gene C - 12-03-2015 08:22 PM And I thought it was because you had a bicycle like that when you were little RE: Trivia Advent Calendar - L Verge - 12-03-2015 08:40 PM I was always too short to get on one of those things back in 1890 when I was ten... RE: Trivia Advent Calendar - RJNorton - 12-04-2015 05:10 AM Speaking of Jack Lincoln I am quite familiar with this sad picture: But Cowen's Auctions had a close-up of Jack's face in bed that I do not think I have ever seen before: http://www.cowanauctions.com/auctions/item.aspx?id=99205 RE: Trivia Advent Calendar - Eva Elisabeth - 12-04-2015 06:13 AM (12-04-2015 05:10 AM)RJNorton Wrote: Speaking of Jack Lincoln I am quite familiar with this sad picture:How mature, knowing and sad he looks - so closely even more haunting. Thanks for sharing. It has always struck me that "Jack's" bike had the small wheel in front. I've never seen that elsewhere. This tree currently stands in a city that has many links to the "Lincoln saga". Where is it? [attachment=1982] RE: Trivia Advent Calendar - RJNorton - 12-04-2015 06:26 AM Since Mary's family was from Lexington, Kentucky, I will guess Lexington. RE: Trivia Advent Calendar - Eva Elisabeth - 12-04-2015 06:35 AM This is a very smart guess, Roger, but I am sorry it's not Lexington. But you are correct in the assumption that this city has ties also (!) to Mary. (Truth to be told I had always imagined Lexington as a smaller city without any high buildings! But I think my phantasy cheats me likewise about many other places.) RE: Trivia Advent Calendar - Gene C - 12-04-2015 07:02 AM I'll guess Chicago. Isn't that building on the right, Bob & Emily Newhart's condo building? Sure looks like it to me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-PLEhiOeVA RE: Trivia Advent Calendar - Eva Elisabeth - 12-04-2015 07:06 AM Kudos, Gene, that is correct! You win a "General Electric first Xmas lighting outfit": http://www.loc.gov/rr/scitech/mysteries/christmaslights.html RE: Trivia Advent Calendar - Eva Elisabeth - 12-04-2015 06:06 PM The clock tells me window #5 could be opened. VoilĂ : [attachment=1985] Xmas and fireplaces go together well. Where is this fireplace? RE: Trivia Advent Calendar - RJNorton - 12-04-2015 06:16 PM Vicki and I have been to the Gamble Plantation a few times, but I do not remember exactly what the fireplace looked like. But I will guess the Gamble Plantation in Ellenton, Florida, where Judah Benjamin hid for awhile in 1865. RE: Trivia Advent Calendar - Eva Elisabeth - 12-04-2015 06:41 PM This is an outstanding guess, Roger! I am sorry to say this is not at the Gamble Plantation. I don't recall how many fireplaces there are (were) at the Gamble Plantation, however, this is one (behind the lady demonstrating the coffee mill): [attachment=1986] RE: Trivia Advent Calendar - RJNorton - 12-05-2015 04:54 AM My next guess will be the fireplace at President Lincoln's Cottage (Anderson Cottage). RE: Trivia Advent Calendar - Eva Elisabeth - 12-05-2015 06:07 AM Kudos, Roger, that is correct! Here's the entire photo: [attachment=1988] You win this presidential stocking to hang out for Xmas: [attachment=1987] You may also try it tonight instead of boots because tomorrow is St. Nicholas Day, and the "Nikolaus" will fill good children's (of all age) boots with little gifts and candy. Sometimes he requires a poem to be recited, and since I know some of you speak German, here's a standard (and beautiful) one to prepare (written in 1862 by Theodor Storm): http://www.pinselpark.de/literatur/s/storm/poem/vondraussvom.html (And yes, I can recite it! Theodor Storm also wrote this famous tale: http://www.theodorstorm.co.uk/translations/dykemaster.htm ) Now get your boots ready for tonight! RE: Trivia Advent Calendar - RJNorton - 12-05-2015 07:01 AM Thanks, Eva! I finally got one right! |
