I want your Photograph--I want it at once--There is no use in your saying you 'will probably send it to me--' I must have it--I cant do without it and I dont intend to do without it--I must have it, if it costs me a trip to [redacted] and a race with Blood hounds to chace you down and then carry you to town with these strong arms and hold you until we can get your darned old phiz in type.

First, to whom was this written?
Second, who was the writer?
First clue: It was not Sandburg.

First - Marilyn Monroe ?
Second - Keya Morgan ?

At the one and only Marilyn Monroe estate auction, held by Christie’s on October 27, 1999, Keya Morgan bought hundreds of items, including much of Marilyn’s private library, with many personally inscribed books. Along with many other items he accumulated over the years, he now possesses the largest Monroe collection in the world, as well as large portions of the estates of her second husband Joe DiMaggio and close friend Marlon Brando.

Not sure if his book was ever published, the movie has been in the works for several years.

to whom was it written? - Hablot Knight Browne?

writer? - Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr?

RE: A Sandburg Stumper - Rob Wick - 11-16-2019 08:18 AM

Holmes, Sr., would be a logical guess, Roger, but it isn't him or Browne.

Next clue. The story was told to Sandburg in a letter written shortly after World War II.

Wild guess - was the letter's recipient Lilian Steichen (before she married Carl)?

RE: A Sandburg Stumper - Rob Wick - 11-16-2019 06:58 PM

Sorry Roger, but that's not it.

Next clue: It took the recipient of the letter 16 months to provide the writer with a picture.

Logical guess, Steve, but that's not it.

Think 19th century.

David Herbert Donald?

RE: A Sandburg Stumper - Rob Wick - 11-17-2019 02:44 PM

Yes Roger, Donald told Sandburg the story, but of course that doesn't identify the two people I'm seeking.
