RE: Extra Credit Questions - Eva Elisabeth - 03-02-2015 06:48 AM I've tried to find it without success. The most recent Lincoln Herald edition to be downloaded for free is of 2010. The most recent Lincoln Herald edition to be downloaded for free is of 2010. That is what I have been finding as well - limited online, electronic availability. Understandable. I will try to find a copy by other means! RE: Extra Credit Questions - RJNorton - 03-12-2015 04:38 AM Abraham Lincoln once gave a speech from the steps of this hotel. John Wilkes Booth stayed here while performing in the town it was located. Where was this hotel and what was its name? RE: Extra Credit Questions - Gene C - 03-12-2015 07:47 AM Interesting picture Roger. Is that firewood stacked next to the telegraph? pole at the front right curb? No people, horses or carriages. No activity outside. Must be off-season. I have no idea, but to get the ball rolling I'll try Semi Famous Motels for $10 What is Aunt Millie's Boarding House? I think the ownership has changed over the years, after the Howard Johnson family sold it, the orange roof was replaced and it is now an Atlantic City Tr@mp Ca$ino? RE: Extra Credit Questions - RJNorton - 03-12-2015 08:49 AM I am sorry, Gene, but that's not it. Hint#1: Lincoln's visit here came before Booth's. RE: Extra Credit Questions - Gene C - 03-12-2015 09:08 AM I've got it now. A slight correction to my previous post.... Did this occur in a hotel that has since been torn down located in a more western state than New Jersey? Like maybe the Leavenworth Planter's Hotel in Leavenworth Kansas? I found this interesting article about something that happened at the hotel http://www.nps.gov/subjects/ugrr/ntf_member/ntf_member_details.htm?SPFID=36584 Here is another photo --second row, far right. Click on it for an enlarged view. http://www.leavenworthcounty.org/gallery_historic.asp Leavenworth,Kanasa was a dangerous place at this time. (Note the last two paragraphs) http://www.legendsofkansas.com/leavenworthbordertroubles3.html RE: Extra Credit Questions - RJNorton - 03-12-2015 09:56 AM Kudos, Gene! That's it! Lincoln was there in 1859, and Booth stayed in the hotel in late 1863 (p. 139 of Art Loux's book). You and Joy win free tickets to stay on the re-created steps of the hotel the next time you two are in Leavenworth. RE: Extra Credit Questions - Gene C - 03-12-2015 10:06 AM Thanks Roger. I'm glad we didn't win a free nights stay at Leavenworth's other famous accommodations. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Penitentiary,_Leavenworth RE: Extra Credit Questions - RJNorton - 03-12-2015 11:22 AM Gene, I was thinking of that, but then you would have been separated from Joy. The re-created steps allow for both males and females. RE: Extra Credit Questions - Eva Elisabeth - 03-22-2015 10:45 PM What was JWB given $ 64,58 for? RE: Extra Credit Questions - RJNorton - 03-23-2015 04:15 AM A strange incident happened on October 12, 1860, in Columbus, Georgia, at the Cook's Hotel. Matthew Canning accidentally shot John Wilkes Booth in the thigh (or thereabouts) as the two men were "playing" with a pistol in Booth's room. Feeling bad, Canning scheduled a benefit performance (Julius Caesar) for John Wilkes Booth. This is the amount Booth received from the benefit performance? RE: Extra Credit Questions - Eva Elisabeth - 03-23-2015 06:36 AM This is an excellent guess, Roger, but he wasn't given the money for a theater performance. RE: Extra Credit Questions - RJNorton - 03-23-2015 07:50 AM On Monday, April 13, 1863, Dr. May removed a fibroid tumor from Booth's neck. This operation took place in Washington. Is this the amount Booth's health insurance company reimbursed him for Dr. May's surgery? RE: Extra Credit Questions - Gene C - 03-23-2015 09:14 AM Being in the insurance industry, I can answer that for you Roger. "No." However, accoding to the Governments new Unafordable Care Act, there is the possibility that a loop hole exist that might provide him coverage. (no one really knows yet) http://www.hhs.gov/healthcare/rights/law/index.html Unfortunately Booth was dead in slightly over two years following the surgery, and so the government would not have processed his paperwork yet, and therefore would have never paid the claim. RE: Extra Credit Questions - Anita - 03-23-2015 10:06 AM Booth submitted a claim for payment for his service in the Richmond Grays. He received a payment of $64.58. Source: "Day by Day by Loux |
