RE: Extra Credit Questions - STS Lincolnite - 10-12-2014 06:02 PM

Ummm...I'm going to guess a theatre production. Tongue

RE: Extra Credit Questions - Eva Elisabeth - 10-13-2014 02:22 AM

A good guess on a good track, Scott. I'm only looking for the (name of) place.

Is it the Academy of Music in New York? On his inaugural train trip, while in New York, Lincoln attended a performance of Giuseppe Verdi's opera, "Un ballo in maschera," on February 20, 1861.

RE: Extra Credit Questions - Eva Elisabeth - 10-13-2014 04:32 AM

Your guess is brilliant and VERY close, Roger, but I'm sorry to say this sketch doesn't depict the Academy of Music.

Hint #1: The establishment was run by this gentleman, who also served two terms in the CT House of Representatives:

Hint #2: Roger's idea of the inaugural trip came very close.

the picture looks to me like P T Barnum so maybe the Castle Garden Theatre

I think Lincoln saw a play in Albany on his journey east. Is that it? Did I win anything?

RE: Extra Credit Questions - Eva Elisabeth - 10-13-2014 04:38 PM

Very good, Gene, the gentleman in the photo is P. T. Barnum, but the sketch does not show the Castle Garden Theatre. Joe, I'm sorry, it was not located in Albany either.

Hint #3: Mary, Tad, and Willie visited this establishment during the inaugural trip.

RE: Extra Credit Questions - L Verge - 10-13-2014 06:58 PM

Was there a theater attached to Barnum's Museum in NYC?

RE: Extra Credit Questions - Eva Elisabeth - 10-13-2014 11:43 PM

Excellent, Laurie. The sketch shows the Lecture Room of Barnum's American Museum (in1853), which actually was an elegant theatre.

Please go here for more info on a very interesting man and his fascinating live and ventures:

I think every guesser deserves the prize - of the artists of our days, Barnum might have featured the great mime Marcel Marceau, alias "Bip the Clown":

Whose home was this?

Can't help it - although this house looks different to the photo on Anita's link on the other thread it instantly looks like the Edwards' home to me. (Remodeling result perhaps??)

RE: Extra Credit Questions - RJNorton - 10-20-2014 04:23 AM

That is an incredibly excellent try, Eva, but it is not correct. But you are right - it was Anita's link that made me think to post this question.

Hint #1: The house still stands.

RE: Extra Credit Questions - Eva Elisabeth - 10-20-2014 05:37 AM

Ok. Without further consulting Anita's link for inspiration, I have some more ideas. I'll "stay" in Springfield first (without knowing if the houses still stand).
The Edwards' home reminds me of the Lincolns' wedding reminds me of the "original"(ly intended) setting, thus the Francis' home?
