The song which you have included by Jacques Brel was adapted by Glen Campbell in 1968; and he translated the French title "ne quittes pas" into "Don't Go Away." The Belgians are the best in two things that are usually thought to be very American; namely French fries and waffles. Their weather is often cloudy and rainy, which might help to explain any melancholy aspect to their character.

Aren't they famous for chocolate too? I had a French tutor who was from Belgium, and she used to go into a kind of trance when she discussed chocolate from her homeland.Tongue

Jacques Brel's "Ne Me Quitte Pas" is one of my favorite songs. So many artists...Neil Diamond, Barbra Striesand, Dusty Springfield, Nina Simone...all have interpreted it beautifully.

Yes, my favorites were Leonidas (although these are only "middle class"), especially
the white ones with hazelnut and mocca cream:

There is a well-known brand of Belgian chocolate bars called "Côte d'Or" which are very good. The name means "Golden Coast."

Robin Williams died today!

So sad and shocked about Robin Williams..I simply can't wrap my mind around the idea that this brilliant funny man would end his own life in such a way.

The Belgians are also well-known for their gorgeous lace. I had to resist the urge to buy bolts of it when I was there forty years ago.

RE: Extra Credit Questions - Rogerm - 08-12-2014 10:45 AM

Unfortunately, I think we can only purchase Côte d'or products through the internet.

What building is this?

RE: Extra Credit Questions - RJNorton - 08-15-2014 11:20 AM

Could that be the medical school at the University of Maryland in Baltimore which Dr. Mudd (as a student) attended?

RE: Extra Credit Questions - Eva Elisabeth - 08-15-2014 11:26 AM

Good guess, Roger, but it isn't any school building!

RE: Extra Credit Questions - Eva Elisabeth - 08-15-2014 12:42 PM

Hint #1: The name of its location let me first think of a lighthouse and a library.

RE: Extra Credit Questions - RJNorton - 08-15-2014 01:36 PM

Is this a hotel or inn that Lincoln once stayed in?

RE: Extra Credit Questions - Eva Elisabeth - 08-15-2014 01:40 PM

1/2 of your guess is correct, Roger, it is a hotel/boardinghouse. In case A. L. ever spent a night there, I don't know thereof.

Hint #2: This is a sketch of the WONDER-ful lighthouse the name of the location of the building makes me think of:
