Mark Twain's Grave-site- Vandalized! - HerbS - 01-03-2015 Mark Twain's Grave-site has been vandalized in Hellmira,NY.Sad to say,but it is a"sign of the times".His bronze plaque disappeared from his monument. RE: Mark Twain's Grave-site- Vandalized! - LincolnMan - 01-03-2015 More trying to cash in on the metal piece, I suppose. I've heard the laws have tightened for facilities accepting metals from scrappers. Too bad that things have come to this... RE: Mark Twain's Grave-site- Vandalized! - HerbS - 01-03-2015 Hopefully, the perpetrators will be caught soon! RE: Mark Twain's Grave-site- Vandalized! - BettyO - 01-03-2015 No one has any respect for anything anymore -- very sad! RE: Mark Twain's Grave-site- Vandalized! - HerbS - 01-03-2015 BettyO.I agree 100% RE: Mark Twain's Grave-site- Vandalized! - Gene C - 01-03-2015 News article http://www.stargazette.com/story/news/local/2015/01/02/woodlawn-cemetery-mark-twain/21193295/ RE: Mark Twain's Grave-site- Vandalized! - HerbS - 01-03-2015 Thank you Gene!Great job of research. RE: Mark Twain's Grave-site- Vandalized! - LincolnMan - 01-03-2015 I couldn't access the page. Apparently the article has moved. RE: Mark Twain's Grave-site- Vandalized! - Jim Garrett - 01-04-2015 Many Confederate Veteran's graves have a Southern Cross of Honor, a cast iron marker, that will disappear sometimes for the value of scrap, sometimes as a political statement. It is truly unfortunate that their are those that put a few dollars or their own agenda foremost. RE: Mark Twain's Grave-site- Vandalized! - HerbS - 01-04-2015 The perpetrators have big mental problems, and they must have wierd egos! Apparently the article has moved.Bill, it does work for me (on the phone). RE: Mark Twain's Grave-site- Vandalized! - LincolnMan - 01-05-2015 This time it worked. I was pleased to read of the Detroit connection with Twain. A comment is nade in the article that it wasn't thought to be the work of a scrapper. So why else would it be stolen? Your thoughts? RE: Mark Twain's Grave-site- Vandalized! - HerbS - 01-05-2015 Thoughts-The perpetrator was an anti-Twain person,or a very jealous author!?Who knows, perhaps an anti-Twain family friend! RE: Mark Twain's Grave-site- Vandalized! - RJNorton - 01-05-2015 I remember several years ago when there was an incident of vandalism at the Lincoln Tomb in Springfield. A copper sword was stolen from a statue on the tomb's upper level. A teenager was arrested. He said he didn't do it to make money from the scrap. As I recall no specific reason was given other than it was simply a case of the kid getting a thrill from climbing up the statue and getting the sword. RE: Mark Twain's Grave-site- Vandalized! - Gene C - 01-05-2015 I think your right Herb, this person is probably a frustrated writer. Which reminds me of a song... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9G6H2tQCaOA |
