Lincoln Wallet - Thomas Lapsley - 08-09-2014 10:47 PM

Recently, I talked with a leather company of the possibility of a replica of Lincoln's Wallet (the original in the Library of Congress). I was wondering if anyone knows the actual size and measurements of the wallet. A replica of Lincoln's Wallet, along with the upcoming replica of Lincoln's Pocket Knife would make fine items for the Lincoln collector or Lincoln Presenter.

That's a great idea. I hope it gets acted on. I did order the knife but haven't gotten it yet.

Hi Bill, please excuse that I'm so curious (no need to reply) - you seem to have quite a collection, what is your craziest item? And which do you like best (and why)?

Anyone else's "report" is appreciated, too!

Eva: hmm... I'll have to think about that one! I do have a large collection. Half of my house on the first floor is the "Lincoln room." Sometimes I refer to it as my home Lincoln museum.

Was the Confederate five dollar found Lincoln was carrying actually in his wallet?

RE: Lincoln Wallet - RJNorton - 08-13-2014 02:35 PM

Bill, according to the information I have, the wallet contained a Confederate 5 dollar bill and 8 or 9 old newspaper clippings. I have seen sources that say 8 and others say 9. I do not know which number is correct.

Thank you Roger. I didn't know if the paper money was actually in his wallet or found in one of his coat pockets.

I think the Confederate $5 bill was found on Lincoln's person.Thus-I have added a $5 Confederate[Richmond,Va] to my collection.

RE: Lincoln Wallet - RJNorton - 08-14-2014 04:21 AM

Has anyone ever found how Lincoln acquired the Confederate $5 bill?

RE: Lincoln Wallet - HerbS - 08-14-2014 07:44 AM

Yes,Lincoln got the Confederate $5 Dollar Bill in Richmond with Grant when the war ended.

The Confederate $5 bill is worth about $50-today!

RE: Lincoln Wallet - Thomas Lapsley - 08-27-2014 10:57 PM

According to the Library of congress, the size of Lincoln's Wallet is: 3-3/4 inches high, opens out to 6-15/16 inches wide, and folds twice to the width of 2-1/4 inches. The size of Lincoln's $5.00 Confederate Bill is 7-1/8 inches wide, and 3 inches high.

From the pictures of the Confederate bill- it didnt appear to have been folded. I wonder if dicuments state it was actually in the wallet itself.

RE: Lincoln Wallet - HerbS - 08-31-2014 06:31 AM

The $5.could have been in Lincoln's pocket.but,it was on him that terrible night.

RE: Lincoln Wallet - LincolnMan - 08-31-2014 09:43 AM

That's for sure Herb. I own two Confederate bills of that type. They seem very thin compared to our notes. It would be easy when folding them to leave creases.

RE: Lincoln Wallet - HerbS - 08-31-2014 10:49 AM

I have two also and I agree with you 100%.
