New Book on Lincoln Photographs
I have always enjoyed books on Lincoln photographs and have several going back to Frederick Hill Meserve's from 1944. Yesterday I received information from Keya Morgan that a new one is on the way:

"This month Keya Morgan is finishing up his book about every known photograph of Abraham, Mary, Willie, Eddie, and Tad Lincoln. It is being published by National Geographic and Random House. The book will be translated in 25 languages and the National Geographic magazine has also requested to do a cover story about his book."

That should be a nice book. Glad that he will be sharing his collection that way.
I hope they don't "colorize" to many. To me, they are more striking in b & w

So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in?

Are the pictures being colorized?

Bill, I do not know. In the announcement I received from the author there was no information either way on this.

RE: New Book on Lincoln Photographs
It will be interesting to see what is included in this new volume of "every known pose." Will it add anything to Ostendorf's "Lincoln Photographs: A Complete Album"? I imagine that Morgan will not so readily accept some of the bogus photos that Ostendorf so willingly accepted. However, there still appears to be some controversy, including on this symposium, about the "Eddie" photo.
Books of Lincoln photographs have always fascinated me, from the early work of Fredrick Hill Meserve up to the present.

One of the best, I think, was Mellon's "The Face of Lincoln." If you do not have this, try to find one for your collection. It is truly exceptional. On the ridiculous end, was the recent Kunhardt volume, "Lincoln, Life-Size," the purpose of which is elusive. And, finally, Stefan Lorant's photographic biographies were well-done.

I notice that Keya Morgan's book can be pre-ordered. I think I am going to wait for reviews , particularly the instructive comments I can always find from all of you on the symposium.

Joe

It looks like this project may be on hold?

Didn't see anything on the National Geographic website either.
Anyone out there know anything additional about this?

I've searched everywhere and it has disappeared! If it is on hold one would think there would be an announcement about it. The only thing I can think of is contacting the Keya Morgan Gallery.

Gene and Anita, I do not know about the National Geographic book, but Mr. Morgan's collection is featured in the book Toia wrote about here.

On Twitter last fall Mr. Morgan made this announcement:

Sounds like there may have been a change of publishing houses. To some of our authors: is it a frequent occurrence for a large project of that type to switch publishers?

RE: New Book on Lincoln Photographs
Thanks Roger. I remember reading Toia's review of "Life Lincoln: An Intimate Portrait" but didn't make the connection to Morgan's book "Lincoln the Definitive Photographs". I can't find any reviews on Morgan's book to compare these publications. The Life book has 130 Lincoln photographs from Morgan's collection. I wonder, does anyone on the forum have a copy of the National Geographic book. If so, how many Lincoln related photos are included?

Thanks Roger.
Evidently Amazon has updated the page for the Nat Geo book and it now shows the Time/Life book on the same page too.
(at least for now)

Anita, I don't think the Nat Geo book was ever printed. It's not shown on National Geographic's books web site.

RE: New Book on Lincoln Photographs
Gene, I agree it's likely the Nat Geo book wasn't published. The whole thing is most curious. I have emailed the Keya Morgan Gallery and asked if the Life book is a replacement for the Nat Geo book and that if so I will purchase the Life book. Will see if I get a response.

Thanks Toia for your comments about the Time/Life book. I'm sure it will end up in my collection.

Anita, I bought Lincoln: An Intimate Portrait after I read Toia's post about it. It's an absolutely wonderful coffee table book. Toia used the word "YOWZAH," and I would second her. Just make sure your coffee table has strong legs - it is indeed big and heavy.
