It is a fitting day to recall these words that Lincoln spoke at Independence Hall on the Declaration of Independence's principle that "all men are created equal."

They're not necessarily treated equally though. Let's not forget that.

Agreed, Maddie, and that applies no matter what race, gender, creed, etc. Political rhetoric will never overcome human nature to denigrate someone else. Only belief in much high principles can do that.

Agreed! And as soon as our political leaders are willing to acknowledge that there is a higher authority than government, and are willing to live there lives accordingly, the better this country will be. President Lincoln's second inagural speech is a perfect example.

That statement was Lincoln's core belief that drove his actions as President. No what other things he said or did-(and some of those seemingly contrary to the statement), his belief was always there.

"All men are created equal." That is kind of an ambiguous statement because obviously all men (and women) are not exactly the same. There is alot of difference in talent, intelligence, ambition, personality, etc. among individuals, and that will limit opportunity to some degree.

My opinion is that equal refers to their value as a person and not as to their talents or abilities.
The Bible tells us God is not a respector of persons. (Acts 10:34)

I have always taken that to mean that everyone is born with a clean slate and the opportunity to make of themselves what they will. You are quite right, however, that there are constantly things working against us as we try to achieve our goals.

My problem with"All Men Are Created Equal".Is that some people believe that-some people are more Equal than others!

I see this happen all the time at my workplace - unequality is rampant, unforunately - irregardless of tenure OR education!

Don't ever be a free thinker in education and expect Equality!

Well said Laurie. We are CREATED equal. It's what happens along the way........something call life. The ideal is that we should all be able to live as equals, however we all know the realities are much different.
