This subject has nothing to do with Herold.I knew I should have looked up the material before I mentioned Thompson. I did this research in early 2005 and the details got fuzzy.
I found Thompson mentioned in "Prominent Tennesseans", that referenced J. F. H. Clairborne's "Mississippi as a Provence ... " This has a good biography on Thompson, but it is limited in size. It is referencced in other writings on Jake. I got a copy from the historian at Elmwood Cemetery, in Memphis. She is Jorja Frazier (email historian@elmwoodcemetery.org) She has a large file on Jacob and Kate - they are buried there (I have pic of tombstone).
Beyond that - I used "The Life of Jacob Thompson" by Dorothy Zollicoffer Oldham (S-I-L to William Faulkner) She wrote the Life story a a thesis for a Masters at the University Of Mississippi in 1930. This is extensive (300 pages =/-) footnoted, descriptive of Jake, etc. If you intend to write on Jake, I'll see that you get a copy. I don't know if it is readily available (My copy is stamped RETURN TO UofM, THIS BOOK DOES NOT CIRCULATE) The "Life" is based on Mamie's translation and dictation, and interviews of relatives and letters from fellow Politicos. One more thing, Mary Ann (Thompson ) Slate = "Mamie" is Jake's niece (not his granddaughter). She lived with Mr and Mrs J.T. in Memphis after the War. Jake died 1885. PS. Maybe Laurie can scare up my story on Kate Thompson. I had to research her in order to show that Sarah Slater and Kate Thompson were two different people. (That was about 2007 Laurie. My copy was copyrighted and is now in a "Safe Deposit Box" not readily available.) I think it is interesting because of the surprise ending. I'll help you all I can - with ggod stuff that I will research before I spout. JOHN

I have an odd inquiry-is Dorothy Zollicoffer Oldham related to Confederate General Felix Zollicoffer??
Gen. Zollicoffer married twice 1. Louise P. Gordon (Who had 19 children, only 6 survived infancy) 2 Elizabeth Nicholson. A daughter Octavia Zollicoffer Bond wrote a book "The Family Chronicle and Kinship Book", in it she mentions MACLIN - CLARK - COCKE - CARTER - TAYLOR - CROSS - and GORDON. Nary a word on Oldham. On the Oldham side, Dorothy born 1905, died 1965, unmarried. However , her sister Lida Estele Oldham did marry William Cuthbert Faulkner. Thus, I find no apparent reason to honor the Zollicoffer name by reason a of a kinship. There may be a kinship, say, through a brother or sister of the General, but I didn't search that possibility.
