I wonder if this unnamed person could conceivably be Grace Bedell (the girl who encouraged Lincoln to grow a beard in 1860). In 2007 researcher Karen Needles found a second Grace Bedell letter to Abraham Lincoln. It was discovered in old Treasury Department documents at the National Archives. This letter, dated January 14, 1864, was a request for Lincoln's help as Grace was seeking employment in the Treasury Department. There is no record of any response by Lincoln; it is probable that the letter never reached his desk, but maybe it was given to Mary Lincoln instead.
