Tonight, is a "Blood Moon". I believe that Carl Sandburg wrote about the prairie farmers seeing the blood moon appearing around the time of the assassination.
I checked and there was a partial lunar eclipse visible in most of North America on 11 April 1865, three days before the assassination --- so a lunar eclipse but not a blood moon.
Thank you.
In his book, Blood on the Moon -- the best single volume on Lincoln's assassination -- author Ed Steers noted:
And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.
The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, the terrible day of the Lord cometh.

Joel 2:31-32

In a 2001 C-SPAN interview with Brian Lamb, Ed said:

"It [the title] comes from the Book of Joel in the Bible, and it wasn't the original title. The original title was "Sic Semper Tyrannis," what Booth yelled from the stage. But this is really an Apocalyptic event in American history, and so I just thought that the title, which comes from the Bible, where it's Apocalyptic -- just to fit so nicely. And I think most people now agree."
I do agree! (And Happy Birthday, Mr. Lincoln!)
