Loyalty on the Line: Civil War Maryland in American Memory
David K. Graham
The University of Georgia Press, 2018
ISBN 978-0-8203-5363-0
Amazon hardcover price: $53.95; Kindle: $32.95
I'm almost finished with an interesting and provocative book on interpretations of Maryland's Civil War history in American memory, both immediately post-war and into the 1960s during African Americans' struggle for civil rights. Graham argues that Maryland could not and did not adopt a unified postbellum identity and that Maryland's place in national affairs was tarnished as a result. While I don't necessarily agree with several of the positions taken, this book has been an educational and hence worthwhile read. It is vastly over-priced at only slightly over 200 pages, but recommended for those with an especial interest in Maryland Civil War history.
