I work for a large agency chartered by the State of Maryland that is fighting in the Supreme Court to save what is known as the Bladensburg Peace Cross in our county. If interested, please read this link.

I meant to post a photo of this memorial and forgot. Go here for the photo and the history as supported by the American Legion https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/all...edirect=on

You can also type in Bladensburg Peace Cross for info from Wiki. One note that you might pick up on when reading the history is that this monument to WWI casualties with additional recognition to succeeding wars is within walking distance of the War of 1812 Battle of Bladensburg site where American forces were defeated, allowing British troops to enter Washington City and set it ablaze.

I'm sure that most of the readers here already know where my conservative views lie, but we had a discussion at work the other day as to what the Supreme Court's decision might mean in terms of the millions of military cemeteries here and abroad that have headstones marked with crosses and Stars of David.

It was also surprising to me when this issue first came up several years ago to find that there is a Freedom FROM Religion Foundation. I don't have an opinion on that one way or the other, but it was another lesson learned in the field of civil history.
Well, I suppose that the next step is to change the US motto "In God We Trust" ?

And your oath of allegiance is under threat ('one nation under God' ) too.

Unfortunately, swipes at those have gone on for years. There was a famous crusade against them about fifty years ago, engineered by avowed atheist Madelyn O'Hare (hope I remembered the name correctly).
Madalyn Murray O'Hair
I remember her. She came to a rather gruesome end per the linked Wikipedia article
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madalyn_Murray_O%27Hair

and more detailed article about her, by her son William

Trivia time (and it's a two-parter!); without the ever-present, all-seeing eye of Google,
1. When did "In God We Trust" appear on US money? and

2. What purported diary or journal of a well-known 19th century celebrity does this fact destroy?

I do not know about #2, but I think #1 happened while Lincoln was President. So I shall guess 1862.

I'm old, but not that old! I remember the motto being added to paper currency when I was in my teens (maybe mid-1950s? Before Kennedy's administration, though). For some reason, I associate it in the same span of years as Madalyn Murray O'Hair's protests. I associate the late-1950s through the 1970s as the era of craziness when it came to rejecting principles that our country had been founded upon. We're in era II, right now, IMO.

Now, when you say money, that can also mean coins; so, it may have been added to those during Lincoln's time.

I'm like Roger - no idea about #2.
#1 I'm sure this has to do with FDR. I read something about it yesterday when looking at the various arguments re. this Thread. Whether he introduced it or defended 'In God We Trust' I'm not sure. I'll say it was FDR in 1936 (obviously a guess) .

I assumed coins were included when I said 1862. I am not sure of the year, but I do think it was during Lincoln's term.
Hint - It was added to coins and paper money at different times. And one was during Lincoln's administration.
Sorry for being so late getting back to the trivia question.

Laurie and Roger were closest to the first part - When did "In God We Trust" first appear on American money.

Answer: First on the 2 cent piece in 1864 during, of course, Lincoln's adminstration.
First on paper money in 1957 under the Eisenhower adminstration.

Second part of the trivia question - This fact destroys the authenticity of which diary/journal of a famous 19th century person?

Hint - The person was a sailor.
Jacob Nagle?
Richard Henry Dana Jr.
Matthew Perry?
