Jim, in a very general sense, you are on the right track.

Hint #2: Our clubhouse has no pool/billiards tables.
Chess? Cards?
That's it, Eva! He was playing cards. Good job.

I would give you a one week, all expenses paid trip to Las Vegas, but I cannot afford that. So you will have to settle for very best wishes for a wonderful late-summer weekend in Germany.
Thanks, Roger - thanks, that's always great prize!!!
Who is this gentleman?
[attachment=1811]
The earliest known photo of George Cottingham?
Great guess, Roger, but, sorry, not correct.
Dr. Charles Urquhart, Jr?
Another excellent guess, Roger, but it's not he either.
Hint #1: His name lately occured on the forum.
I have never seen this particular photo, but the facial features remind me of a ca. 1935 photo that was taken of Floyd Risvold, the editor of Weichmann's manuscript.
Kudos, Laurie - you nailed it. I was sure this would need longer.

When you asked about his business and his publishing intentions I wanted to know more about him, too, but this is almost the only info I found:

The photo is from this obituary:

As for the prize - would an expedition to the West, Southwest, or Alaska be appropriate?
Wow - I think I could have guessed 200+ times and not answered correctly! Never thought of this man. Good job, Laurie, and good question, Eva!
I am very poor at identifying and remembering photo-faces. I'm not sure why this one clicked. Eva, I would love to see the Grand Canyon with Wild Bill as my guide. I'll add the prize to my bucket list for when I finally decide to retire. Thank you.
A person who is part of the Lincoln assassination saga became quite ill at this location. Who was he or she?
