Lincoln Discussion Symposium

Since I know nothing of this actor I cannot think of any clues. So here is what I came across. The actor's name was Frank Mordaunt. The quote is in a footnote in Inside Lincoln's White House: The Complete Civil War Diary of John Hay edited by Michael Burlingame and John R. Turner Ettlinger. The original source is the June 1905 Chicago Inter-Ocean.

This person was in the audience at Ford's Theatre on April 14, 1865. What is his name?

Eva, that is an outstanding guess, but it's not him. I do not believe I have ever seen a photo of Stewart.

Hint #1: This person's middle name was Payne (or Paine).

Thomas Payne Gourlay?

Brilliant, Rich! That is correct - well done, sir! I found his middle name spelled both ways on the web - I do not know which is correct.

I have his original wedding license and it is spelled Payne. This is a picture of him in later years with his son's and one step son. He is second from the left.

Thanks, Rich. I did an Internet search to see if I could find his account of the assassination and found it here (about half way down).
