James J. Gifford.
Gifford?
It's a tie. Laurie & Rich got it.

Gifford was owed money for building Tudor Hall that Mary Ann Booth never paid him and this caused him to lose his own home. His association with Booth as an employee at Ford's cost him his freedom for a while. I've never heard how he got along with JWB, but Edwin said he hated him.
Who is this man?

Fredrick Seward?
Good guess, Gene, but it's not him.

Hint #1: He was in the audience watching Our American Cousin when the shot was fired.
Burnside?
Nope, not him, Joe.
Ok, this is a one in 1,200 guess...is it James P. Ferguson?
Sorry, Rich, but it's not him.
Either father or son Gourlay?

Hess1865

That fellow Stewart, who chased after Booth??
Is it William Withers the orchestra leader?
I am sorry Laurie, Mr. Hess, and Craig, but it's none of those folks.

Hint #2: He did not stay at the theater after the shot; he took off running.
The reporter who took off to the telegraph office to report the assassination?
